Book/Movie Recommendations for a Cozy Night In

It’s the middle of January, which means two things: it’s cold, and (like most people) I have to make a very difficult decision every day: face the freezing cold, or stay in bed. Since I’m lazy a fan of staying warm, I usually just choose to stay curled up in my bed with multiple blankets, my laptop, and some snacks. If you want to do the same, but are bored of mindlessly searching the internet (which honestly, same), here are some recommendations for books and movies you can enjoy on your next cozy night in!

Books

Pieces of You is honestly one of my top favourite books. It’s a collection of short stories that all feel depressing and comforting at the same time, which doesn’t sound encouraging or cozy, but trust me when I say that once you pick up the book, you won’t be able to put it down. The stories feel like they’re real, and will pull you into their world. Once you’re there, you just might not want to leave.

On the flip side, Love Her Wild is a light and fluffy collection of love poems, which are easy to read through and will leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling. It’s perfect for reading when there’s rain outisde, so you can feel like you’re transported to your own cozy, happy little world.

Not quite a poetry collection, but not necessarily a novel either, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous might be one of the few books that I genuinely enjoyed reading for class (as an English major who’s assigned way too many books on a weekly basis, that should say something). Even though the story technically isn’t poetry, it plays with the words’ sounds a lot, creating a really unique and satisfying rhythm as you read.

Unlike the others, Watchers isn’t a cozy book. In fact, it’s a suspenseful/horror novel, so it might not be the first thing you think of for a cozy night in. While I can’t promise it’ll make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, it will keep you on the edge of your seat (bed?) while you read it, and I would recommend reading it while snuggling up with a million blankets and a cup of tea, because honestly, that’s how all books should be read. Also, cozy blankets help make not so cozy stories go down easier.

Movies

While We’re Young isn’t necessarily a top-level comedy, or the world’s best movie, but it is a movie that I always feel weirdly comforted by. The movie seems to alternate between trying to be deep and having absolutely zero greater meaning at all, which is also weirdly comforting (because honestly, if Hollywood execs with their huge budgets can fail at their own expectations but still make something good in the process, then so can you). It also shows basically all of its characters fuck up at some point, which is also oddly comforting. Basically, watch this movie if you need validation and also please don’t ask why I own it on DVD. Overall though, it is honestly a good movie, and I’d definitely recommend watching it.

Even though The Princess Switch is technically a Christmas movie, it’s 100% worth watching in the middle of winter during a cozy night in. Honestly, we need more festivities in the middle of the winter, and considering the fact that the temperature right now matches Christmas, there are zero reasons not to watch this light-hearted rom-com during your next winter cozy night in.

We’re the Millers is arguably the perfect movie to watch during a cozy night in, with its crime plot meets wholesome family content meets pure comedy. It’s lighthearted and fun, and the perfect movie to help break up the grossness cold of winter.
